Primary School

From Foundation to Year 6, our Primary School provides students with a welcoming environment in which they can learn and thrive, both academically and socially.

Our Primary Years program delivers high-impact, human-centred learning grounded in evidence-based practice and our commitment to nurturing curious, capable, and confident learners.

Our curriculum

Our learning approach at SCG reflects our Focused Learning philosophy, which prioritises clarity, scaffolding of learning, and deliberate practice to ensure students’ master essential skills.

Students engage in daily literacy and numeracy lessons that strengthen foundational skills, build experience, and provide strong foundations for higher-order thinking.

Across Foundation to Year 6, English and Mathematics are taught through structured, explicit, and evidence-informed approaches grounded in cognitive sciences.

InitialLit (Foundation – Year 2)

In the early years, we implement InitialLit: a proven, evidence-based program from MultiLit that supports early reading, spelling, and language development through systematic phonics instruction. This ensures every child receives a consistent and explicit foundation in early literacy.

Structured and Guided Inquiry (F–6)

Our Learning and Teaching Model blends explicit skill development with rich learning. Through Inquiry, students explore concepts across:

  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures
  • Design and Technologies

In the Primary School, inquiry is purposeful, rigorous, and developmental.

Foundation-Year 2 students learn Place-Based Inquiry. Through this, students investigate their immediate environment, building their curiousity and foundational research skills.

In Years 3-6, Guided Inquiry takes centre stage. Students pose questions, collaborate, research, and synthesise their ideas with increasing independence.

Broadening students’ experiences through specialist programs

To ensure a rich, well-rounded education, Primary School students participate in a diverse and engaging specialist program. Our specialist programs support SCG’s vision to develop creative, well-rounded enterprising and high-performing students.

Specialist subjects

A strong learning community

Learning in the Primary School is strengthened by:

  • strong relationships between students and teachers
  • a culture of care, inclusion, and respect
  • deliberate opportunities for collaboration and connection
  • a learning environment designed to honour each student’s strengths and individual pathway

This approach ensures our learners develop the foundation, confidence, and agency needed to thrive through their schooling and beyond.
