Year 9 at Southern Cross Grammar is a pivotal year of growth, challenge, and discovery. It blends academic rigour with authentic learning experiences, fostering resilience, critical thinking, and a strong sense of identity. Our approach ensures students are well-prepared for senior years and life beyond our campus.
Throughout the year, students engage with complex academic challenges that extend thinking and build intellectual stamina.
Deep inquiry, interdisciplinary projects, and real-world applications encourage students to question, analyse, and innovate. These opportunities strengthen higher-order thinking skills and develop perseverance, giving students the confidence to meet academic demands with determination.
The Year 9 program at Southern Cross Grammar is a transformative experience where academic ambition, meaningful connections, and authentic learning intersect. At the end of the program students emerge resilient, engaged, and ready for the opportunities ahead.

Co-Curricular Program
Our co-curricular programs are essential to embedding and contextualising the learning that takes place in our classrooms. Whether constructing an electric guitar, performing in a musical, designing for a light festival, or competing in a robotics challenge, students develop and apply their knowledge in real-world, meaningful ways.
Our Performing Arts program opens up a world of creativity, confidence, and collaboration. Whether your child loves music, drama, or the thrill of performing on stage, our comprehensive program ensures they are fully supported.
Students have access to dedicated performing arts spaces on our campus and the Centauri Centre. These include music rehearsal rooms, the Instrumental Music Village for instrumental lessons and the Workshop and Performance Space on the third floor of Centauri Centre, designed for rehearsals and smaller performances.
The Centauri Centre’s auditorium provides a professional environment for concerts, productions and showcases.
Our Instrumental Music Program is offered across all year levels (Foundation through to Year 12).
It is a Semester (two term) minimum commitment and is an additional charge to families.
Students can choose from over 15 instruments and varying lesson times (30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes).
Lessons are provided before school, during school hours and after school on a rotational roster to ensure that students do not always miss the same class.
Our sporting program is designed to develop technical skills, game awareness and lasting physical activity habits.
Through a combination of Physical Education (PE) classes, House sport and competitive pathways, students have the opportunity to build their athletic ability, strategic thinking, and personal confidence in a supportive yet high-performing environment.
Students have a rich variety of clubs to explore, providing opportunities to develop new skills, deepen their interests, and connect with peers.
Clubs run before school, at lunchtime and after school, giving students flexibility to get involved in ways that suit their interests and schedules.
From clubs including STEM clubs where students design, code, and build robots to take on challenges to Art Club for students interested in artistic expression, students are encouraged to pursue current and new interests. Students are also encouraged to take ownerships of their interests by leading or developing their own clubs, ensuring the co-curricular program remains dynamic and student driven.
Belonging plays a vital role in the Year 9 experience. As students continue to develop their sense of self, we create environments where they feel truly valued and connected.
Student Wellbeing
At Southern Cross Grammar, we are deeply committed to our students’ wellbeing.
We understand that a supportive and nurturing environment is essential for academic success and personal growth.
Our comprehensive wellbeing program is designed to promote mental, emotional, and physical health, ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Year 9 brings major experiences that further extend learning beyond the classroom.
The Whitsundays Experience is a cornerstone of the Year 9 program, where students experience firsthand one of the world’s most significant natural environments.
Designed as an immersive learning opportunity, the week-long program fosters independence, resilience, and connection to Australia’s marine environment.
Student Voice and Agency
At Southern Cross Grammar we believe that students learn best when they have a sense of ownership over their education. We integrate student voice in ways that are purposeful and meaningful, so students feel heard, valued and empowered to take initiative in their learning and school experience.
We do this through:
- Student Representation and Leadership: Whether through Student Councils, House Leadership, or Peer Mentoring, we provide platforms for students to lead and contribute.
- Inquiry-Based Learning: We encourage students to ask questions, explore topics of interest, and engage in deep learning experiences that build curiosity and initiative.
- Co-Creation in Learning: We design learning experiences with students. We value their insights into how they learn best and ensure they see themselves as active participants in their education.
