After months of planning and construction, we have officially opened our upgraded basketball courts, complete with new coverings that will help protect students from the sun and wet weather while making the space usable year-round.
The new court coverings represent a significant investment in the School’s facilities and commitment to creating future-focused environments where students can learn, connect, and thrive.
“The opening of our new undercover courts is another important investment in the experience we provide for our students,” Principal, Brayden Stone, said.
“It reflects our commitment to creating high-quality, future-focused environments where students can learn, connect, be active and thrive.
“This flexible space will provide greater opportunities for sport and physical activity, as well as performances, music, events and broader community gatherings throughout the year, supporting our Forward Together Strategic Plan and our focus on the wellbeing, growth and development of every student.”
Opening the Courts
The upgraded courts were officially opened on National Health and Physical Education Day, creating the perfect opportunity for students and staff to experience the new space.
For Head of Health and Physical Education Liam Ogden, the immediate enthusiasm shown by students and staff upon the courts’ opening ushers a new chapter of sport and physical education to our School community.
“The upgraded courts are a fantastic addition to our school and will make a huge difference to our Health and PE, and sporting programs. Having a dedicated, high-quality space means our students can be active and participate in sport all year round, regardless of the weather,” he said.
“It has been particularly rewarding to see students and staff so quickly embrace the new space, especially during National Health and Physical Education Day. Seeing the energy around the space has really highlighted the positive impact these facilities can have on our school community.”
Delivering a Shared Vision
The project was delivered through the collaborative efforts of our Facilities team and contractors, with significant work undertaken during the Term 2 holidays and throughout Term 3.
Seeing the completed courts filled with students on opening day was a proud moment for our Head of Facilities, Kevin Pace, and a fitting reward for the months of planning and work involved.
He said, “Seeing our staff and students step onto the court on the very first day it opened was incredibly rewarding. The excitement, enjoyment and sense of pride throughout the school community made it clear just how much this project means to everyone who comes to Southern Cross Grammar each day.
“It is without doubt one of my proudest moments during my time at Southern Cross Grammar.”
As the new courts continue to be embraced by our community, we look forward to hosting sports and community events in the space for everyone in our school community to enjoy for years to come.
