Year 5 student, Jonathan, has been awarded first place in the 13th International Young Pianist competition by Steinway & Sons.
Jonathan competed in the Children’s Category earlier in August 2026, where he performed Etude No II by Moskowvski and Lento con gran espressione by Chopin with internationally acclaimed pianist and chamber musician Dr Kenji Fujimura adjudicating the competition. Dr Fujimura praised Jonathan’s articulation and accents in the right-hand chords, and since the competition has invited Jonathan to Japan to perform and compete with other young pianists.
The International Young Pianist Competition provides a global stage for young high-performing pianists to showcase their talent, receive professional evaluation from distinguished pianists from around the world, and engage in cross-cultural musical exchange.

Jonathan has been an active member of our music program since Year 1 and also plays the Violin.
Jonathan has been an active member of our music program since Year 1. He plays in Heron Choir, Year 5 Band, and the String Orchestra where he plays the Violin, and also performs at school assemblies and piano recitals.
At Southern Cross Grammar our students are supported by experts in their field who guide them to achieve excellence in their craft. Experts who include Maria Fiteni, his teacher, who joined our music department five years ago with over 30 years of experience teaching the piano. “I’ve had the privilege of teaching Jonathan and watching his musical development. His involvement across a range of musical ensembles and performances reflects his versatility as a young musician and his enthusiasm for contributing to the musical life of the school” she said.
“I am particularly proud to see students such as Jonathan flourish within a supportive and comprehensive music program at Southern Cross Grammar. Jonathan is a wonderful example of how strong and inclusive music program can nurture young musicians from early age, building their skills, confidence and love for music while encouraging them to pursue their musical potential.”
We are proud of Jonathan’s achievement, musicianship, and dedication to his craft.
